Atomic-Scale Devices in Silicon & the Solid State Quantum Computer
I am also the Program Manager for Atomic Fabrication and Crystal Growth in the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology and the Director of the Atomic Fabrication Facility which homes a suite of state of the art Scanning Tunneling Microscopes (STM) / Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facilities. This project has the focussed objective of fabricating a solid-state quantum computer in the silicon material system from the atomic level upwards. The first goal is to construct and characterise a two-qubit device using phosphorous-31 dopants in silicon, which will form the basic building block of a scaleable silicon quantum computer. The next goal will be to establish a blueprint for scale-up to a practical large-scale quantum computer.

In addition to the fabrication of quantum computer prototype devices a new program has been established to exploit the technology developed to build devices in silicon one atom at a time. This program will concerntrate on developing atomic scale devices in silicon with applications appropriate to and beyond quantum computation, including atomic scale transistors, quantum waves and quantum circuits. Fundamental concepts of dopant ordering, device reproductivity and the key role that surface interface chemistry has a device operation will be addressed. Finally this program will expand to couple atomic scale lithography in silicon with molecular electronics.

Quantum Electronic Devices
My research interests are also in the experimental investigation of quantum effects in extremely high quality semiconductor devices. As electronic devices have become smaller and purer, interaction effects between the individual charge carriers have become significant and now dominate the physics of these systems. This is highlighted by the recent unexpected discovery of a 'metallic' state in strongly interacting, pure 2D semiconductors. There is still no theoretical consensus as to what the origins of this state are but whatever the physical origin, these ultra-pure systems show promise for the understanding of other hitherto elusive ground states in semiconductors such as the 2D Wigner crystal and the 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. In particular the research concentrates on understanding the fundamental nature of electrical conduction in high quality two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) GaAs-based electron and hole transistors. This work includes nanofabrication and low noise electronic transport measurements at cryogenic temperatures.

The position on the authorship list reflects the contribution to the work undertaken by each author. Where I am first author, the work is primarily my own, second, third and fourth authorship indicates a significant contribution to the work reported. In other works I have been part of an experimental team developing new fabrication or measurement techniques.
